26 Trump impeachment articles? What Cohen actually proposed

Rep. Steve Cohen announced 26 proposed articles on Sept. 24. That announcement was not a House impeachment vote.

The Tennessee Democrat’s list accuses President Donald Trump of abuses of power, violations of his oath and profiting from the presidency, among other claims. They are Cohen’s allegations, not findings by a court.

The number is the count of proposed articles—not 26 impeachment votes. The House must adopt articles for a president to be impeached; the Senate then holds a trial. One lawmaker’s proposal alone does not impeach a president.

A separate resolution came to a House vote on Sept. 15. Members voted 232–147, with 47 present, to table Rep. Al Green’s H.Res. 1486. That was a different measure from Cohen’s Sept. 24 announcement.
