Is Netflix’s UNABOMBER based on a true story?

The Harvard study and FBI hunt are real. Netflix’s writers say the film’s central Murray–Kaczynski relationship is speculative.

Netflix describes UNABOMBER as a drama inspired by true events. It moves between Ted Kaczynski’s Harvard years and the investigation that ended with his 1996 arrest, but it is not a documentary.

What really happened

Kaczynski attended Harvard and took part in experiments led by psychologist Henry Murray, according to Netflix’s own explainer. The FBI says its case began after a bombing in 1978. In 1995, after the Unabomber’s essay was published, Kaczynski’s brother David contacted investigators; they arrested Ted the following year.

What the film adds

Joanne Miller, the FBI agent played by Shailene Woodley, is fictional. The screenwriters also say the close personal relationship and dramatic clashes between Murray and young Ted are speculative; they found no evidence for that exact relationship.

What the story cannot prove

The film makes the Harvard episode feel like a turning point. But a dramatic link is not proof of cause. The record confirms Kaczynski took part in the study; it does not establish that the study caused his later attacks. That separates a documented event from a screenwriter’s interpretation.
