Nikon changes microscopy video rankings after a generative-AI rules decision.
The organizer’s October 9 decision concerns competition eligibility. Nature reported the disqualification on October 12.
Nikon said on October 9, 2026 that the first-place Small World in Motion video did not comply with its generative-AI rules, after reviewing the video and supporting materials with its judging panel. It adjusted the rankings. Nature reported the disqualification on October 12.
What the decision establishes
Nikon describes a competition eligibility decision and explicitly separates it from a judgment about the entrant’s reputation, scientific contributions or intent. It also says the event shows a need to revisit rules and evaluation procedures for future entries.
A useful check before submitting AI-assisted work
Our interpretation: keep the original capture and a record of processing, and check the rules of the specific destination before submission. Permission to edit an image in one context does not establish eligibility in another.
Do not infer more from the headline
This decision does not settle the validity of every AI imaging method. Distinguish an observed measurement, a processed visualization and generated content when explaining what an image shows.
