Before you paste that into AI, remove these details.

Getting a quick summary is useful. Sharing a password, identity number or customer record usually isn’t needed.

It’s easy to paste a whole contract or email thread into an AI assistant and ask for a summary. But data retention and model-improvement settings can differ by service, account type and workspace. OpenAI, for example, says eligible conversations on individual services may be used to improve models depending on settings, and offers controls for new conversations.

A control is not a blanket answer to every privacy or security question. Check the policy and workplace rules for the exact service you use. Often, you can get help with a smaller, anonymized excerpt: replace real names with “Client A,” remove account numbers, and keep only the passage needed for the question.

Before pasting: remove passwords, government ID numbers, payment details, personal contact information and identifiable customer or employee records. Replace details with fictional examples. Then review the account’s data controls and your organization’s policy.
