You deleted the chat. Why does ChatGPT still remember?

A saved memory can live separately from a conversation. Here’s where to clear both.

You delete a conversation where you mentioned something personal. Days later, ChatGPT brings it up again. The chat deletion may have worked: ChatGPT can keep a saved memory separately from chat history.

Open Settings → Personalization → Memory and review or delete the saved item. Then delete the conversation where you first shared it. If the information is in a Library file, delete that file too. Disconnecting a connected app stops future access, but does not remove past chats that already used its content—delete those separately. Menu names and controls can vary by plan, region, platform and workspace.

Turning Memory off is different from deleting its sources. If you turn off Reference chat history, information drawn from past chats is scheduled for deletion from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days, but the original chats stay in your history unless you delete them. OpenAI may also retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.

Temporary Chat does not create or update memories while it remains temporary, but OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. “Temporary” does not mean immediate permanent deletion.

Remember: delete the saved memory and the sources it came from—not just the conversation. If you only want a one-off chat, check the Temporary Chat settings before you start.
