AI HELP · SURVEY DRAFTS 2026-10-14

An AI survey asks if service is “fast and accurate”. Which one are you rating?

Ask one thing per question, remove praise built into the wording and check whether the answer choices fit everyone who should respond.

Treat an AI questionnaire as a draft. Write down what each answer should tell you before accepting polished wording. A single answer to two different qualities may not identify which one needs improvement.

Split the combined question

Our invented draft asks: “How satisfied are you with our fast and accurate support?” It praises the service and combines speed with accuracy. Split it into “How satisfied are you with the response time?” and “How satisfied are you with the accuracy of the answer?”

Review the choices as well

For this satisfaction example, consider a balanced ordered scale from very dissatisfied to very satisfied. Check whether “I have not used support” or “I cannot judge” belongs in a separate option. The right choices depend on who receives the survey and what they experienced.

Use the AI to find ambiguities

Ask it to list combined concepts, assumed experiences and missing answer choices, then review each suggestion. Pew’s methodology guide recommends clear, specific questions, one concept at a time, and non-overlapping response choices. Smooth prose alone does not meet those goals.

Pretest before collecting conclusions

Ask a small set of intended respondents what they think each question means before a full launch. Pew describes pretesting as part of questionnaire design. Our revised wording is an editorial example; it has not been validated with respondents or shown to remove all bias.
