Ali Hazelwood’s romance began with a Rey and Kylo Ren fan story. The film adds a real-life loop: Tom Bateman plays Adam, and his wife is Daisy Ridley, who played Rey.
The movie is now streaming globally on Prime Video. It follows Olive, a Ph.D. student, and Adam, a professor, as they agree to fake-date.
Before the novel, Ali Hazelwood wrote a story inspired by Rey and Kylo Ren. Her literary agent found it and helped turn it into The Love Hypothesis, a new romance set in STEM academia. The published book and movie are their own story, not a Star Wars sequel.

The actors didn’t plan the coincidence
Tom Bateman plays Adam in the film. He and co-star Lili Reinhart said in an ELLE interview that Bateman and Ridley did not know about the fanfiction connection when the role was offered. Director Claire Scanlon explained it to him afterward. Ridley played Rey in the Star Wars films and is Bateman’s wife.
