AI says the weather is 30 degrees. Celsius or Fahrenheit?

Keep the original unit beside the value. 30°F is about −1.11°C; it is not 30°C with a different label.

An unlabeled number is not enough to choose what to wear or describe the weather. Check the weather source, place and forecast time, then convert only a value whose unit is known. The NWS gives °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32; reversing it gives °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.

Three conversions we checked

Our invented inputs were 30°F, 86°F and 0°C. A local calculation returned about −1.11°C, 30°C and 32°F respectively. These are unit-conversion examples, not observations or a forecast for a real location.

Give AI the source unit

Suggested input: “This source labels the value 30°F. Convert it to Celsius, retain the original reading, show the formula and round the result to two decimal places. Do not infer today’s weather from this example.” If the source says only 30, ask for the unit instead of guessing.

Do not confuse a reading with a change

A change of 9 Fahrenheit degrees corresponds to a change of 5 Celsius degrees. The 32-degree offset belongs to converting a temperature reading, not a temperature difference. We checked both cases separately.

Conversion is only one check

A correct conversion does not validate a place, timestamp, forecast or weather warning. For an actual plan, read the current local forecast and its units. Do not treat an AI conversion as a newly checked weather report.
