You deleted the chat. Why does ChatGPT still remember?
A saved memory can live separately from a conversation. Here’s where to clear both.
Deleting a chat removes it from your account view, but a separate saved memory—or the same detail in another chat or file—may still personalize a reply. That can make it feel as if the deleted conversation came back.
Start at Settings → Personalization → Memory. Review the memory summary and saved items, then delete the relevant item. The summary is high-level and may not show every detail or source. If available, Delete and turn off memory removes the information shown in the summary and turns Memory off; it does not delete past chats.

Review each source, then tick it after you have handled it.
Your choices stay on this page. They are not saved or sent.
A deleted chat disappears from your account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. Exceptions apply if it was already de-identified and disassociated from your account or must be kept longer for security or legal reasons. Turning off Reference chat history also schedules history-derived information for deletion within 30 days, but leaves the original chats unless you delete them.
Improve the model for everyone controls whether new conversations can be used to improve models. Turning it off does not delete saved chats or memories.
For a one-off conversation, start a Temporary Chat and choose Unpersonalized before it begins if you do not want existing personalization used. While temporary, it does not appear in history, create or update memories, or improve models; OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Saving it turns it into a regular chat.
Memory controls vary by plan, platform, region and workspace. OpenAI may retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.
