Why did Justin Verlander’s daughter run onto the mound?

On Sept. 26, Verlander’s seven-year-old daughter ran onto the mound for a hug during his final major-league start.

Genevieve wore a Tigers jersey with her father’s name and number. His teammates gathered around them, and his wife, Kate Upton, came down to embrace him. The crowd at Comerica Park gave Verlander a standing ovation.

Verlander’s final line was 5⅓ innings, five hits, two runs, one walk and six strikeouts. The Tigers later beat Pittsburgh 4–3 on a three-run, ninth-inning rally.
